![]() Several morphological and metric aspects of architectural structures are acquired throughout a massive data capture system, such as the Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and the Structure from Motion (SfM) technique. The documentation of built heritage involves tangible and intangible features. Not having the opportunity to devote himself to concrete design practice, Piranesi entrusted his utopias to imagination and drawing. In architecture, the overcoming of limits can be found in his inventions: in the impossible configurations of the Carceri and the colossal architectural fantasies collected in the Opere varie. His overcoming the limits in the field of perspective is demonstrated by the expedients with which Piranesi skilfully mastered perspective to adapt the composition to his aesthetic and expressive wishes, anticipating and synthesising modern cinematographic techniques in a single image. The price he had to pay to achieve the freedom, poetry and freshness of sign, with which he expressed the power, depth and audacity of his imagination, concerned some technical failures found on the copper matrices. In the technical sphere, Piranesi went beyond the limit during his incessant experimentation to get the secret of etching to which he aspired. The contribution investigates the theme of overcoming the limit in Piranesi’s art, examining the subject in three different aspects: the technical, perspective and architectural fields. Non avendo l’opportunità di dedicarsi alla pratica progettuale concreta, Piranesi affida all’immaginazione e al disegno le sue utopie. In ambito architettonico, il superamento del limite si ritrova nelle sue invenzioni: nelle configurazioni impossibili delle Carceri e nelle colossali architetture di fantasia raccolte nelle Opere varie. Il superamento del limite in ambito prospettico è dimostrato dagli espedienti con i quali Piranesi domina sapientemente la prospettiva per adattare la composizione alle sue volontà estetiche e comunicative, precorrendo e sintetizzando in un’unica immagine alcune moderne tecniche cinematografiche. Il prezzo da pagare per raggiungere la libertà, poesia e freschezza di segno con le quali esprime la potenza, la profondità e l’audacia della sua immaginazione, riguarda alcuni fallimenti tecnici rintracciabili sulle matrici in rame. In ambito tecnico, il superamento del limite deriva dall’incessante sperimentazione a cui Piranesi si dedica per raggiungere quel segreto dell’acquaforte cui tanto ambiva. Il contributo indaga il tema del superamento del limite nell’arte piranesiana, approfondendo l’argomento attraverso tre sue declinazioni: l’ambito tecnico, prospettico e architettonico. The conclusions outline the possibility that Piranesi has adopted these stylistic choices in order to make the overall view and details of the archaeological site more comprehensible at the same time, implementing an operation that makes the side walls less foreshortened. He, in fact, introduces the expedient of moving the projection center away from the picture plane, gradually considering parts of the structure closer to the observer. ![]() Despite the approximations due to the nature of the data used, the author’s attempt to manipulate perspective is evident. ![]() Through the analysis, based on the principles of the perspective method and compared with the Nymphaeum survey, it was possible to identify the fundamental elements (horizon line, ground line and projection centre) of the perspective approach adopted by Piranesi. The subject represented is the so-called Nymphaeum of Egeria, an archaeological structure still existing today, located in the Appia Antica Regional Park. After a brief presentation of the previous researches concerning aspects of the interpretation of Piranesian spaces, the contribution proposes a geometrical analysis of the "Veduta della fonte e delle spelonche d’Egeria fuor della Porta Capena or di S.Seb.no", collected in the "Vedute di Roma" (1748–1778). In the year of the birth anniversary of the important Venetian artist, the paper aims to contribute to the great amount of studies conducted on the figure and work of Giovanni Battista Piranesi. ![]()
